Much of the time, the standard treble hooks that some with new lures are of freshwater grade. For freshwater fisherman, that's perfect. For the saltwater fisherman, that spells problems. Ever open up your tackle drawer to find rusty trebles making a mess of things? Ever break a treble during a battle? The odds are, that answer is yes.

For smaller lures, a pair of split rings is sometimes too big, and most of us don't carry specialty tools like split ring pliers into the field.
